Skyline downed by Newport, Issaquah girls get one more chance | Prep sports news

Updates from playoff action in Issaquah-Sammamish, including Skyline's near-miss for a 4A KingCo volleyball title and Issaquah's third straight winner-to-state match Saturday.

Skyline falls in KingCo title match

It took all five sets and a comeback with their backs against the wall, but the Newport volleyball team kept its conference record perfect Thursday night in hostile territory at Skyline, beating the second-seeded Spartans to take the conference title and earn the top seed from KingCo to the 4A state tournament.

The Knights dropped the first set 25-21 before going down 2-0 after Skyline won the second 25-19.

But it was too much Newport down the stretch, as coach Steve Trachy’s squad rebounded with 25-21, 25-20 and 15-12 wins.

Skyline will take the second seed from KingCo to the 4A state tournament Nov. 15 at either Saint Martin’s University or Timberline High School in Lacey.

Issaquah set for another winner-to-state match

Issaquah will play its third straight winner-to-state match Saturday at 4 p.m. against Kamiak at Everett’s Goddard Stadium.

The Knights beat Snohomish 2-0 to earn 4A Wesco’s pigtail spot while the Eagles have dropped two straight, first to rival Skyline in the title game and then in a 2-1 loss to Inglemoor.

The season ends for the loser while the winner will head to state as the third seed from the district.

EC volleyball one win from state

Eastside Catholic swept its way past Bellevue in the 3A Sea-King volleyball tournament, moving one stop closer to a trip back to the 3A state tournament next week.

The Crusaders took care of Bellevue 3-0 Thursday to set a Saturday date with Mercer Island at 11 a.m. at Chief Sealth High School.

The winner heads to the evening’s championship match while the loser will have two more opportunities to take one of the district’s five state playoff berths.
