Lianna Simms hadn’t netted a varsity goal all season.
The Skyline junior couldn’t have picked a better time than Saturday afternoon.
In the 22nd minute, she set up a penalty kick from 15 yards out and drilled the ball into the left upper corner for the goal. Her impressive shot marked the game’s only score as the Spartans claimed a 1-0 victory over Bellarmine Prep.
Simms was filling in for defender Jackie Wilson, who suffered a serious leg injury in the previous night’s 2-0 victory over Tahoma.
Goalkeeper Tina Vargas recorded her 11th shutout of the season and her fourth straight shutout in the state playoffs. The Spartans outscored opponents 5-0 in four state tournament games, ending their season with a 18-0-2 overall record.
The state championship marked Skyline’s third in the last four years and third in school history.
