State golf | Eastlake’s Penner leads after day one

Eastlake senior, and UNLV recruit, Kevin Penner shot a 4-under par 72 Wednesday at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick in the opening round of the 4A state championships.

Eastlake senior, and UNLV recruit, Kevin Penner shot a 4-under par 68 Wednesday at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick in the opening round of the 4A state championships.

Penner, who won the state title two years ago, carried a three-shot lead over three other golfers headed into Thursday’s final round. Hank Frame from University (Spokane); Phil Reedy from Oak Harbor and Dylan Stensland of Snohomish all shot 71s.

Eastlake teammates Ethan Nash and Evan Alston failed to make the cut. Both golfers finshed 10-over par. Skyline’s lone representative, Nick Tran, finished 14-over par.

Issaquah’s Derek Wilson made the cut, shooting 7-over par, finishing in a tie for 30th. Kevin Moon also made the cut with an 8-over par. He was tied for 38th place. Eastside Catholic’s lone representative C.J. Danforth finished 34-over par in the 3A tournament at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland.

Eastside Catholic’s Koehler in sixth

Eastside Catholic’s Kimmie Koehler finished the first day of the 3A girls tournament Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland with a 7-over par 79. She was tied for sixth with three other golfers. Katrina Hegge of Seattle Prep led after day one with a 5-under par. Eastside Catholic’s Ashley Danforth also made the cut with a 14-over par, tied for 27th place.

Eastlake’s Emmie Schwartz finished 11-over par 83 at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course, tied for 34th. Teammate Dana Mydland just missed the cut with a 13-over par, while Megan Wotherspoon finished 18-over. Skyline’s two representatives, Emily Baldwin and Chelsea Guenette both missed the cut. Baldwin shot a 16-over par and Guenette finished 20-over par.
