Swimming: Eastside Catholic’s Hallowell repeats as state champion

For the second straight year, Eastside Catholic’s Ethan Hallowell nabbed state swimming championships in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

For the second straight year, Eastside Catholic’s Ethan Hallowell nabbed state swimming championships in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

The sophomore blazed through the 50 in 20.58 seconds and the 100 in 45.26 seconds Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center. He also led things off for the 200 medley and 200 free relay, which finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Other members of the 200 medley included Spencer Moritz, Tommy McCann and Joe Mahan. Members of the 200 free relay included Matt Leist, McCann and Mortitz.

Moritz, who finished second in the 100 breaststroke last year, took fifth this year in a time of 1 minute,2.37 seconds. McCann placed 14th in the 100 fly in a time of 55.68.

Eastside Catholic earned 111 points and finished eighth place overall. Mercer Island won the 3A championship with a record 475 points.

Issaquah’s Taylor swims to 14th

Jack Taylor was the only Issaquah swimmer to advance through the preliminaries. The junior took 14th in the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.62 seconds. Skyler Kersten finished 19th in the 500 free in a time of 5:10.49 and Brandon Pomeroy was 18th in diving with a score of 211.25.

Palumbo places for Spartans

Skyline’s lone individual competitor, junior Alex Palumbo, placed 14th in the 500 free on Saturday. He finished the race in 4:57.74. The 200 medley relay was 22nd overall.

Alleva grabs 15th overall

Eastlake freshman Zach Alleva placed in his first state competition, taking 15th in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.28. Will Baker took 17th in the 100 fly and the 200 medley relay also captured 17th for Eastlake. Only the top 16 places earn points.
