The epitome of a showdown

The Sammamish Plateau is unique in a myriad of different aspects

The Sammamish Plateau is a unique in a myriad of different aspects.

One anomaly is the fact there are three different high schools — Eastlake, Eastside Catholic and Skyline — located within 1.5 miles of each other. During the interview process for the sports writing position, I learned the schools were pretty close together, but didn’t realize the extreme proximity until my first week on the job in late August. You don’t see that many high schools that close together in most regions of Washington.

The Skyline Spartans and Eastlake Wolves football teams, who according to Google Maps are just a 22-minute walk or a four minute ride by car from each other, are fierce rivals in the Class 4A KingCo Division. The Spartans (5-3) will host the Wolves (6-2) in a battle for not only “Plateau” bragging rights, but for the highest standing possible in the KingCo Division at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31 at Skyline High School in Sammamish.

Newport, Eastlake and Skyline are vying for that second place slot behind the league champion Bothell Cougars. The stadium undoubtedly is going to be packed to the brim for this contest. The main thoroughfare, which is 228th Avenue that connects Skyline and Eastlake, will be jam-packed with fans supporting their respective hometown teams.

I personally am going to make sure I arrive at least an hour before game-time to guarantee myself a decent parking space for the matchup. I have covered football games at both venues this fall and you could just feel the electricity throughout both stadiums. I can only imagine what the atmosphere will be like with both passionate fan-bases in attendance at the same game. The showdown is going to be memorable.
