Neck-to-neck hydroplane races rewarded the crowds who showed up at the Tastin’ and Racin’ event last weekend in Lake Sammamish State Park.
“We had quite a few heats where first and second were fighting,” said organizer Chris Courtright. “They put on a really good show with tight action.”
Attendance at the event was about the same as last year, several thousand, said Ranger Rich Benson, who expects the full figure in a few days.
The number of boats was about the same as last, minus a few vintage boats, which moved out of the area, Courtright said.
It’s a good sign for a struggling sport.
The rain held off Saturday and the sunshine came out Sunday.
“In the Seattle market, where weather being such a factor,” Courtright said.
The Tastin’ and Racin’ is like the Seafair for smaller boats, although the large unlimited class boats also made a showing.
