The cupcake craze has arrived in Issaquah, and it couldn’t be sweeter.
“Everybody loves a cupcake,” said Barbara Kiker, who opened Confetti Cupcakes on Front Street this summer with her son K.B. Kiker.
The duo was attracted to Issaquah, because of how well people here support small businesses; it also helped that there wasn’t any competition.
“I was kind of surprised that Issaquah doesn’t have one,” K.B. said.
The little shop is bright with baby-blue walls and a sign that encourages patrons to “eat dessert first.”
Confetti uses only the best ingredients and real butter, Barbara said.
At $3 a cake, they’re a specialty treat.
The cake is so moist and soft its hard to distinguish where the frosting starts.
The shop isn’t selling mini cupcakes, which are bite-size, but K.B. plans to add whoopee pies.
“It’s like a cake sandwich,” Barbara explained, adding that whoopee pies are easier for children to eat.
A large part of the business is selling for birthday parties and weddings, a popular alternative to towering cakes.
Although living in Puyallup, Barbara has been looking for an opportunity to open a business in Issaquah for a while.
“There aren’t too many places like this,” K.B. said of the historic downtown. “The community supports these businesses around here.”
At the store, Barbara chatted with a customer who wanted American flag toppers to celebrate the election.
A few patio seats are nice on a warm day, but don’t expect to find a place to sit inside, which is setup like an ice cream parlor.
K.B. built out most of the storefront, the former location of Guy Stuff. They have plans to add retail.
“We still have more to do, but we’re getting there,” Barbara said.
Selling her furniture and antique store a few years ago, she decided last year that she wanted to get into the food business.
As a home baker, she knew cupcakes were simple but fun, she said. “I absolutely love it.”
