Chicken served by Issaquah School District recalled; no reports of contaminated chicken in district

A brand of chicken nuggets served in the Issaquah School District on two recent occasions has been recalled due to reports of pieces of metal in the chicken.

OK Foods, Inc. announced the nationwide recall to the district on March 26 after receiving five consumer complaints on March 21.

L. Michelle, the district’s executive director of communications, said that there were no reports made of any contaminated chicken in any of the district’s schools.

The district served OK Foods’ heart-shaped chicken nuggets on Feb. 14 and shamrock-shaped nuggets on March 17 in the district’s 15 elementary schools.

Brian Olson, the district’s food services director, said that there have been five food recalls in the past eight years for foods served in Issaquah schools, but that they have never been due to any contaminated food being found in the district.

“When we receive those recalls, our first reaction is to tell all the kitchens, ‘Don’t use [those products],’” he said.

“We don’t take any chances,” Michelle stated.

Olson said that the district serves products from Oklahoma-based OK Foods three times a year at the elementary schools, as the company makes theme-shaped chicken nuggets for Halloween, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.

When asked if the district would continue to provide nuggets from OK Foods for holidays in the future, Olson said he was not sure, but that he did not like the idea of serving OK Foods chicken again.

“My knee-jerk reaction is to say no,” he said. “There are other companies that do theme nuggets.”

This district’s “broadline distributor” of foods is Food Services of America, according to Olson.
