A 21-year-old Seattle man is in custody after pointing a loaded pistol at another driver on I-90 in Seattle during Friday morning’s commute.
At 9:09 a.m. a motorist called 9-1-1 to report the driver of a grey 2004 Volvo S60 had pointed a gun at him as they were traveling eastbound I-90 just west of the Mount Baker Tunnel. The victim said the Volvo was tailgating him and he could see the driver pull a black semi-automatic pistol out of a holster and point it towards the rear of his vehicle. The victim ducked in his driver seat and quickly changed lanes from the left lane to the right lane in an attempt to avoid potential gunfire.
The victim proceeded eastbound through the Mount Baker Tunnel in the right bore and the alleged assailant sped off in the left tunnel bore. The victim lost sight of offending vehicle as the lanes merged east of the Mount Baker Tunnel. Troopers later located the suspect’s vehicle as it was exiting to NE 148th St in Bellevue from eastbound I-90. The suspect then attempted to evade troopers but was quickly located in St. Andrew’s Church parking lot, across the street from Bellevue College. The Seattle man was taken into custody without incident. A loaded black semi-automatic pistol, holster, and 6 extra rounds of .380 caliber bullets were recovered from the vehicle. The extra bullets were found stored in an ammunition box in the shape of a cross.
After further investigation troopers determined the victim may have inadvertently cut off the suspect as he was merging from southbound I-5 to eastbound I-90, which triggered the road rage.
The suspect was booked into King County Jail for unlawful display of a weapon and has recently been cited for multiple traffic violations including negligent driving, speed, and improper use of emergency equipment.
