On Saturday morning fire crews with Eastside Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a barbecue fire on a porch in the Mine Hill Apartments in the 200 Block of SW Clark Street in Issaquah.
The fire began very early in the morning, with crews receiving the call at 2:23 a.m.
Engines 71, 72, 83, 81, Battalion 71, Air Unit 81, and Eastside Fire Investigation units 131 and 133 attended the fire, in addition to a fire fighting unit from Bellevue.
There were four occupied apartments in the building.
The occupant reported he attempted to use a fire extinguisher to control the fire before evacuating his family.
When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke and flames were coming from the second story deck and had burned through the front door.
Fire was starting to spread to the next door building.
Fire crews protected the exposures, and confirmed that all occupants were out of the building.
There was an adult confined to a wheelchair, and small children, living in the building.
Fire crews extinguished the fire by working from inside and outside the house.
Eastside Fire and Rescue’s Fire Prevention Bureau was called in to investigate the fire, which is currently under investigation.
It is estimated the fire caused $170,000 in damage to the building and contents.
One occupant was transported to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation. Occupants noted that they were awoken by smoke detectors.
Eastside Fire and Rescue remind everyone that smoke detectors save lives, but only if they have working batteries.
Check your batteries.
