Full-day kindergarten coming to Issaquah in fall

Three-quarters of the funding for full-day kindergarten will come from the state. Half-day programs will remain available.

Full-day kindergarten is coming to Issaquah and Sammamish.

The Issaquah School District will implement fullday kindergarten beginning fall 2016, according to an announcement made Wednesday.

Full-day kindergarten is part of the state’s constitutionally protected definition of basic education. The state Legislature authorized funding for programs when it passed Washington’s biennial operating budget in June.

Since the budget was passed, 847 elementary schools in 261 school districts — slightly less than 72 percent of Washington public schools — have received funding for full-day kindergarten, according to data from the state superintendent of public instruction’s office. Schools with high percentages of poverty in their student population were given first priority for funding in the current school year.

All students will be eligible for full-day kindergarten funding beginning with the 2016-2017 school year and all schools will be required to offer full-day kindergarten by the following year.

Enacting the programs will require the construction of portables and the hiring of new teachers, Issaquah School District spokesperson Lorraine Michelle wrote in Wednesday’s announcement. The remaining quarter — an expected $1.5 million — will be taken out of local levy dollars.

“The District is experiencing overcrowding due to continued and rapid enrollment growth and the addition of Full Day Kindergarten [sic] will further increase the District’s needs for classrooms and facilities,” Michelle wrote. “However, we are excited to offer this program and believe it is the right thing to do for our students.”

Half-day kindergarten programs will continue to be available. Details on bussing and the length of the school day will be made available during registration in February and March.

The Issaquah School District operates 15 elementary schools in Issaquah, Sammamish and the Renton Highlands.
