Issaquah police will serve burgers and raise money for differently abled athletes this weekend.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Red Robin, officers from the Issaquah Police Department will serve food to the restaurant’s customers. Tips collected over the lunch rush will benefit Special Olympics Washington.

The Issaquah Police Department and the Issaquah Red Robin are one of 39 fundraisers benefitting Special Olympics Washington throughout the state. Since Issaquah police began participating in the fundraiser in the mid-’00s, officers have typically raised a minimum of $4,000 per year and occasionally raised considerably more, Cmdr. Chris Wilson said.

“I really enjoy it because you can raise money for a great cause,” Wilson said. “One thing that’s cool is that a lot of times, [Special Olympics Washington has] been able to bring Special Olympians to the fundraiser. And we get a lot of officers to turn out.”

Special Olympics Washington is part of the larger Special Olympics organization founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968. Special Olympics Washington was incorporated in 1975. The organization recruits athletes with intellectual disabilities and coaches for training year round and competition in sporting events, including the World Winter Games and World Summer Games.

Saturday’s fundraiser will include a raffle. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased from Red Robin.

Red Robin is located at 1085 Lake Drive in Pickering Place.
