Issaquah teachers agree to participate in statewide protest against legislature; Walkout to be held May 19

"I cannot endorse this walkout and regret the negative impact to our students and families," Thiele wrote. "However, I do share some of the frustration that has led the teachers across the state to take this action."

It looks like Issaquah families can expect to keep their students home this Tuesday.

In an open letter to the community sent out via schools’ email blasters Thursday afternoon, Issaquah School District Superintent Ron Thiele wrote that the Issaquah Education Association had agreed to participate in a statewide walkout Tuesday, May 19, to protest the state legislature’s lack of action on full funding for basic education.

The district is canceling school for the day, given that there will be no teachers to conduct class.

“I cannot endorse this walkout and regret the negative impact to our students and families,” Thiele wrote. “However, I do share some of the frustration that has led the teachers across the state to take this action.”

Thiele added, later: “It is important for families to know that this action by the IEA and our teachers is directed at the Washington State Legislature and NOT at the Issaquah School District community.”

After-school activities, including IB testing, will still be held. The walkout will mean the end of the school year is postponed to May 19 to make up for the lost day.
