Sammamish students raise $9,275 in pennies for leukemia

Sammamish's Inglewood Middle School raised the state's second largest amount in the Olive Garden's annual "Pasta for Pennies" program, generating $9,275 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Sammamish’s Inglewood Middle School raised the state’s second largest amount in the Olive Garden’s annual “Pasta for Pennies” program, generating $9,275 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The final sum is a result of students collecting spare change over a three-week period.

Richland High School collected the most ($10,851) with Edgerton Elementary School in Puyallup third ($8,546).

Students throughout Washington collected $181,000, while $10.7 million was raised overall.

More than 57,500 students at 85 elementary, middle and high schools in 13 counties filled collection jars and boxes in their classrooms. The top fundraising class at each participating school received a pasta party from their local Olive Garden restaurant.

Spare change raised through Pasta for Pennies helps fund blood cancer research and provides services and support to leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma patients and their families.

“We congratulate all of the students who put forth such an amazing effort in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” said John Caron, president of Olive Garden. “Through Pasta for Pennies they have come to understand that even the smallest donation can have a significant impact on their local community. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is moving closer to a cure because of their efforts.”
