Two Sammamish students demonstrated the sense of cooperation that exists between high schools on the Plateau, addressing the Sammamish City Council at their meeting on Tuesday.

Skyline High School senior Tara Northey and Eastside Catholic High School senior Brooke Bachesta approached the council with their idea to rename the streets leading into Skyline, Eastlake, and Eastside Catholic high schools with names reflecting each school. They used the example of Wolverine Way, which leads to Bellevue High School, which is known by its mascot, the Wolverine. The idea had been discussed by the city’s Youth Board.

“We are in the strange position on the Plateau that we have three schools on 228th, in three different school districts,” said Northey, adding that students were always eager to explore ways in which the schools could work together.

Skyline is in the Issaquah School District, Eastlake is in the Lake Washington School District, and Eastside Catholic is a private, independent school.

Councilors and City Manager Ben Yazici briefly discussed potential issues of renaming the streets, such as the inconvenience to businesses on those streets. Yazici said he would get back to the students after researching the city’s options.
