A 27-year-old Tacoma man who was jailed after causing a fatal car accident in Issaquah on Tuesday was released the next day, King County Sgt. Jason Houck confirmed on Thursday.

The suspect, whose name has not been released by the King County Sheriff’s Office, was booked into jail in Kent around noon on Tuesday after striking and killing a 53-year-old Maple Valley man in a head-on collision on Issaquah-Hobart Road early that morning.

Houck said that the Sheriff’s Office is waiting on the results of the suspect’s drug test to file potential vehicular homicide charges against him. The drug test results could take up to two weeks to arrive.

An infant was in the backseat of the suspect’s car at the time of the crash; authorities are not yet certain of the relationship between the suspect and infant. Valley Medical Center took over care of the infant after the suspect’s arrest.

The suspect had been driving erratically and trying to outrun law enforcement just before the crash, Houck said. Just before 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday, a King County Sheriff’s deputy noticed a black Kia driving recklessly on State Route 18. When the deputy attempted to pull the dangerous driver over, he did not comply but instead continued speeding. After about one minute, a sergeant ordered the deputy to terminate the pursuit because it was becoming too risky.

Five minutes later, the suspect crossed the center lane while traveling southbound on Issaquah-Hobart Road, causing the head-on collision. Deputies arrived shortly afterwards and were forced to shock the suspect with a Taser when he resisted arrest.

The victim, who was identified by King County medical examiners as Michael Brooks, died at the scene.

The suspect and infant were taken to Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.
