Eastlake’s Wang places 8th at state golf tournament

He isn’t officially on the Eastlake campus yet, but freshman Li Wang made a splash at the varsity golf level Wednesday afternoon.

Wang finished in a tie for eighth place at the 4A state golf tournament at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick. He shot a 3-over par 147 for the two days, going 2-over, par 74 on Tuesday and 1-over, 73 on Wednesday.

Bellarmine Prep’s James Feutz won the state tournament, shooting a two-day total of 69-69–138, and finishing three strokes ahead of Kentridge’s Sean McMullen (72-69–141).

There were three other area golfers competing in the boys 4A tournament, but they came up shy of the first-round cut.

Skyline’s Jordan Windsor failed to make the first cut of 79, finishing in a tie for 53rd place with a 9-over, 81.

Issaquah’s Kevin Moon also finished above the cut in 53rd place with a 9-over, 81, while teammate Brendan Jung finished in 63rd place with a 12-over, 84.

Eastside Catholic’s John Holt failed to make the cut in the 3A tournament at Richland’s Meadow Springs Country Club. He shot a 16-over, 88, putting him in 70th place.

On the girls side, Eastside Catholic’s Ashley Danforth had the best second-day total of the 3A girls tournament at Horn Rapids Golf Club in Richland.

After shooting an 11-over par, 83 on the first day, she shot an even 72 on Wednesday to put her in a tie for ninth place overall. Danforth was the only golfer to not shoot over par on the second day. She finished at 83-72–155. Mount Spokane’s Savana Bezdicek won the 3A girls state tournament with a 1-over par, 71-74–145.

All three of Eastlake’s female competitors made the first-round cut, helping the team place seventh overall with 27 points.

Megan Wotherspoon and Dana Mydland finished in a tie for 30th place, shooting a 84-82–166 and 83-83–166, respectively.

Emmie Schwartz finished in 34th place with a two-day total of 85-85–170.

Lewis & Clark’s Chessey Thomas won the girls 4A tournament with a 6-under par, 68-70–138.
