Issaquah sets meet record, wins relay title | Prep sports news

The Eagles set a new 4A meet record at the state swim and dive championships.

Issaquah wanted a state title, but senior Ben Nussbaum knew the Eagles also wanted to earn a place in the record books.

They accomplished both feats at the 4A state championships, winning the 200 medley relay in a meet record time, as sophomore Jason Klein, senior Ben Nussbaum, junior Gabe Florsheim and junior Henry Pratt finished in 1:35.91 to take the top spot on the podium and their spot in history.

“The guys are my best friends,” Ben said. “Our relay has been thinking about it (a state title and record) all year.”

The Eagles finished just off the pace in the 200 free relay, as the same foursome swam 1:28.08 to earn second place.

Klein was also fourth and Ben Nussbaum seventh in the finals of the 200 yard individual medley, and Klein earned a fifth place finish in the 100 backstroke in 53.03.

Florsheim earned a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 51.48 and was second in the B Final of the 50 free in 22.37.

Ben Nussbaum was also sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.03, with Pratt second in the B Final of the 100 free in 49.11.

Brother Keith Nussbaum swam in the preliminaries of the 200 free, finishing in 1:50.35, and was third in the B Final of the 500 free in 4:54.39.

Ben said the chance to compete alongside his brother, and several teammates he has known since elementary school, was a fitting end to his prep career.

“The relationship Keith and I have is more than I could ever ask for,” Ben said. “He pushes me, he knows how to get me hyped and in the zone and he pushed me every day in practice.”

Coach Laura Hatler said while it was exhausting with swimmers in every event, the chance to bring a large contingent to state and set a meet record was unmatched.

Issaquah was sixth in the B Final of the 400 free relay, and second in the team scoring behind first time champion and conference rival Newport.

“We’re very fortunate to have athletes that are skilled in different things,” she said. “It says something, and it means team.”

Skyline was fourth in the B Final of the 200 medley relay, with Jacob Leahy, Paul Jett, Ryan Collins and Nick D’Alo swimming one minute, 41.39 seconds. The same group swam 1:30.81 to finish seventh in the 200 free relay.

Jett finished his final prep meet with a fifth place finish in the 100 butterfly and an eighth place finish in the finals of the 50 free, swimming 22.75. Collins finished eighth in the 100 fly and was sixth in the B Final of the 100 backstroke.

“It’s amazing,” Collins said of competing at state. “There is nothing like it.”
