After losing its first five games to start the season, the Wolves defeated Garfield 9-3 Wednesday night in Seattle.

Tied 3-3, Eastlake erupted for three runs in the top of the sixth inning and three more in the top of the seventh inning to seal the victory.

Sam Nasci led the Wolves at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBI. Alex Boyce was 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Joe Shaffer picked up the victory, allowing four hits and two earned runs over six innings. He had three strikeouts.

Eastlake (1-3 in league, 1-5 overall) is scheduled to face undefeated Newport at 4 p.m. Friday on the road.

Issaquah suffers first loss of the season

Newport scored a combined eight runs in the final two innings of Wednesday’s game, including seven in the top of the seventh, to hand Issaquah its first loss of the season, 12-4.

The Eagles rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, 4-4, but couldn’t keep their momentum going.

The Knights’ bats came alive off relievers Matt Houser and Mike Paulson. Newport sophomores Billy Sahlinger and Nate Anderson led that charge, going a combined 5-for-8 with three doubles and six RBI.

Issaquah was led by Spencer Rogers, who was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Devin O’Donnell, who also went 3-for-4.

Issaquah dropped to 3-1 in league and 5-1 overall, moving a game behind Newport (4-0, 5-0). The Eagles are scheduled to face Redmond (3-1, 5-2) at 6 p.m., Friday at Hartman Park.

Skyline tripped up by Redmond

Skyline mustered just two hits and no runs Wednesday, falling 4-0 to Redmond at SHS.

Starting pitcher Colin O’Brochta kept the Spartan bats in check over the first four innings on his way to the victory.

Ryan Beliel was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Mustangs, and Zach Abbruzzaand was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Wes Blackburn recorded a double for Skyline.

The Spartans, who fell to 1-2 in league and 2-4 overall, are scheduled to face Garfield at 3:45 p.m., Friday at SHS.

Skyline drops non-league contest to Bellarmine

Skyline couldn’t hang on to a two-goal lead Wednesday night, falling 3-2 to Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma.

The Spartans led 2-0 after Giancarlo Santoro booted in a goal in the 52nd minute off an assist from Tim Kountz. Pedro Miola scored in the 37th minute via an assist from Austin Crow.

Bellarmine turned up the intensity in the final 26 minutes, scoring three goals. Cooper Doxson scored one in the 54th minute. Michael Rector followed with the game-tying goal in the 76th minute, before Doxson knocked in the game-winner in the 78th minute — with less than two minutes left in regulation.

Skyline fell to 4-2-1 with the loss. The Spartans next face non-league Gig Harbor at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 6 at home.

TENNIS

Blanchet edges Eastside Catholic in co-ed play

Blanchet narrowly edged Eastside Catholic in co-ed tennis play Wednesday night, 6-5.

All three of the Crusader’s female singles players won. Mira Murali edged Emily Mahairas, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3; Moriah Dworkin beat Bobbi Ellison, 6-2, 6-2 and Emily Franceschina defeated Sarah White, 6-0, 6-1.

The boys doubles team of Mark Scafidi and Jake Peterson beat Kris Stroud and Blake Loen, 6-4, 6-0, while the mixed doubles of Julia Hormuth and Bradey Bonocini beat Maddie Stutz and Zach Petschl, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.
