ELECTION NIGHT: Best Starts For Kids levy faces tight race

Approval for the property tax levy was decidedly slim, with only 52.57 percent of voters giving their support in a race where ballots continue to come in.

King County’s Best Starts For Kids levy — a proposition seeking property tax funding for early intervention youth health programs — opened election night Tuesday with approval.

However, that approval was decidedly slim, with only 52.57 percent of voters giving their support in a race where ballots continue to come in. King County Elections will continue to count ballots until results are certified Nov. 24.

Best Starts For Kids proposed to levy a $0.14 per $1,000 assessed-value tax on King County properties over six years. That money would be appropriated for use in health programs focusing on youth, with an emphasis on prevention and early intervention. Fifty percent of the revenue would be used for children younger than five, 35 percent would be used on children and young adults aged 5 to 24, with emphasis on depression and substance abuse programs, 10 percent would be invested in community programs and 5 percent would be invested in evaluating programs’ efficacy through data benchmarks.

The Issaquah City Council endorsed Best Starts for Kids by a divisive 4-3 vote in October.
